Overview
The Loktak Development Authority (LDA), Manipur commemorated World Environment Day 2026 on 5 June 2026 at Phubala, Bishnupur District, Manipur, on the theme 'Inspired by Nature. For our Climate. For our Future.'
The programme was graced by Smt. Pooja Elangbam, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Bishnupur, as the Chief Guest. Shri Ksh. Ravikumar Singh, IPS, Superintendent of Police, Bishnupur, and Shri R.K. Birjit Singh, State Coordinator, IBCN, attended as Guests of Honour. Shri Heisnam Balkrisna Singh, Project Director, LDA, presided the programme.
The World Environment Day 2026 commemoration reaffirmed the commitment of the Loktak Development Authority towards strengthening public awareness, community participation, environmental stewardship and sustainable conservation of Loktak Lake and its associated wetlands.
Programme Highlights
1. Unveiling of Ramsar Site Signage
The first session featured the unveiling of Ramsar Site signage at the Inland Waterways Transport (IWT) Complex, Phubala. The signage serves to highlight the international importance of Loktak Lake.
2. Plantation Programme
The second session comprised of tree plantation programme within the premises of the IWT Complex, Phubala. The initiative symbolized the commitment of the LDA and participating stakeholders towards environmental conservation, ecological restoration and the creation of a greener and healthier environment.
3. Public Function and Awareness Programme
The third session comprised of a public function and awareness programme attended by Wetland Mitras, leaders of local clubs, representatives of NGOs and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), and members of the general public. The public function particularly underscored the importance of community participation and stakeholder engagement in the conservation and sustainable management of Loktak Lake, a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.
